Kennedy Requests Additional Title 1 Funds

Congressman Kennedy and Congressman John Kline sent a letter to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee, as well as the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Labor, HHS and Education. The following is the text of this letter:

"We are writing to request supplemental appropriations for the Title I program for Minnesota school districts. As you know, Title I funding has already increased $3.6 billion, or 41 percent, under No Child Left Behind. While we are pleased with these increases, the impact of newly issued Census data will cause Minnesota school districts to lose $12 million in Title I funding.

"The severe and abrupt loss of up to 100% of Title I funds in some districts has made it very difficult for districts and schools to plan their operating budgets. That is why we request you give these school districts a reasonable opportunity to adjust to the new Title I allocations.

"Under the No Child Left Behind Act, Title I funds are reserved for use by the students whose need is greatest. While we fully support the spirit and intent of this program, we respectfully request you consider the unique challenge this drastic change presents to Minnesota school districts.

"We look forward to working with you to alleviate this burden on Minnesota school districts and ensure they have the resources they need to leave no child behind."
